What Is A Pure Sine Wave Campervan Inverter?
A pure sine wave (PSW) inverter replicates the power output of your home and is the cleanest and most efficient type of inverter compaired with modified sine wave (MSW) inverters.
It can power any appliance or equipment, is highly efficient (90-95% compared to 75-85% for modified sine wave inverters), and is compatible with all electronic devices. However, their sophisticated components make pure sine wave inverters more expensive.

- Inverters consume idle power and can drain the leisure battery while on standby.
- They can be bulky and heavy, making them difficult to install in some campervans.
NOTE: Choosing the right inverter for you and your campervan can overcome all these disadvantages.
Choosing The Perfect Inverter: Key Factors And Features
To choose the best pure sine wave inverter for your camper, you need to understand the key features, like:
- Rated power factor
- Surge power
- Input/output voltage
- Idle power
- Remote switching
- UPS function.
Our post on choosing an inverter dives deeper into each key factor and feature of campervan inverters.
We’ve compiled the key factors and features of the top 5 PSW campervan inverters, including their efficiency, weight, dimensions and cost, into a comparison table for you to digest easily.
Other Factors To Consider
When choosing an inverter for your campervan, there are other factors to consider beyond the basic features. These factors can impact the performance, convenience, and safety of your inverter.
In this section, we’ll explore some of these additional factors to help you make an informed decision.
Connectivity Options For Campervan Inverters
Remote Switching, Bluetooth, COM Port, and PC Software: What Do They Mean?
Remote Switching
Remote switching allows you to turn your inverter on and off from a distance using a remote control. To clarify, an inverter remote control is not wireless like a TV remote; they’re wired into the inverter.
This feature is helpful because it eliminates the need to access the inverter’s physical switch, which can be difficult to reach in some campervan setups.
The Renogy inverter, for example, has an easy-to-use remote with a 3m cable that plugs directly into the inverter.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that lets you control your inverter using your smartphone or tablet.
Some inverters, like the Victron inverter, have a built-in Bluetooth module that allows you to configure and monitor the inverter using the VictronConnect app.
RS 485 COM Port
An RS485 is used to facilitate communication between devices. It uses a cable to connect devices, enabling them to send and receive data to and from each other. For instance, an inverter can send parameter details to a PC, which can modify the inverter settings through the interconnecting cable.
Furthermore, an RS485 interface allows multiple devices to connect to a network via an interface. Since each device can be assigned a unique address, several devices can share the same cable without interfering with each other.
For example, the Epever inverter comes equipped with an RS 485 COM port that can be linked to a PC using the manufacturer’s software.
PC Software
PC software is an application that allows you to configure and monitor your inverter using your computer. Some inverters, like the Epever inverters, have PC software that allows you to monitor the inverter’s output, adjust settings, and perform firmware updates.
PC software is optional and not required for the inverter to function, but it can be helpful for advanced users who want more control over their inverter.
Will You Be Using Mains Hook-up/Shore Power?
Consider an inverter that has a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) function. These inverters switch to mains (230v) power when they sense mains voltage and switch to battery power when it is disconnected. A UPS inverter means no power loss, which is perfect for sensitive electronic equipment.
Alternatively, choose an inverter charger, which has a built-in battery charger. Therefore, when plugged into the mains, as well as providing mains power to your loads, the batteries will charge. When mains power is lost, the charger stops charging the batteries, and the inverter provides the mains power to your loads.
Brand
When it comes to campervan electronic equipment, there are both well-known and unknown brands. At Vandercamp Adventures, we only review and recommend brands we know well, trust and have experience with.
Well-known brands conform to recognized safety standards. So, verify if unknown brands have been safety tested for your country. For instance, in the U.K., the products should bear a C.E. mark.
All inverters in this post are suitable for use in the UK, America and beyond
Some of the top brands we recommend are:
- Renogy
- Victron
- Epever
- Durite
- Sterling
- Redarc
NOTE: This post focuses on the availability of inverter brands in the UK, while they are available in the US and other countries.
Safety Features
Good quality inverters have built-in protection for your safety and the safety of the unit and the wiring. They come with five standard protective features:
- Overload Protection: Excessive current flow can damage electrical circuits and equipment. This feature helps prevent such damage from occurring.
- Short Circuit Protection: In case of a dangerous fault, this feature disconnects the power supply to prevent excess current flow.
- Input Voltage Protection: This feature protects against voltage spikes, safeguarding the inverter and connected devices against damage due to unsafe voltage levels.
- Over Temperature Protection: This feature shuts down or reduces power to prevent the inverter from overheating.
- Low Battery Voltage Protection: This feature disconnects the load when the battery voltage falls below a safe level, preventing damage and improving longevity.
These protective features are essential for your safety and the safety of your inverter and campervan.
Our recommendations for the 5 best pure sine wave inverters have these five safety features as their minimum level of protection. Cheaper brands may not provide this level of protection, hence their lower cost.

RENOGY 1000w, 2000w & 3000w Inverter
The Renogy inverter comes in three models, with power outputs of 1000, 2000, and 3000 watts.
The inverter’s intelligent heat dissipation, durable aluminium casing, low radiation, and anti-interference features make it a reliable and safe choice. Additionally, its sleek design makes it the slimmest inverter available.
It has a UPS function, which means it has both a DC and AC input, with the AC input being given priority. When the inverter detects an AC input, the automatic changeover switch transfers power from the battery (DC) to the mains (AC). Similarly, in case of an AC power loss, the changeover switch switches back to battery DC power. This entire power transfer process occurs within 50ms, ensuring that electronic equipment continues to function without any interruption.
The Renogy inverter also features an easy-to-use remote with a 3m cable that connects directly to the inverter. The remote has a simple on/off switch with an LED indicator.
If you are looking for a simple ‘plug-and-play’ inverter, the Renogy model is an excellent choice. Despite its affordable price and basic features, this inverter performs as well as, if not better than, more advanced models on the market.

The Renogy Inverter Charger is available in 2000w and 3000w output and can charge/maintain a leisure battery when connected to mains power.
When switching from battery power to mains power, the transfer time is 10ms, ensuring the power supply remains uninterrupted. Additionally, the DC input can be from a leisure battery and/or solar power.
The inverter and charger are programmable and can be set up to match your electrical system. Additionally, you can monitor and adjust the parameters using the LCD display.
We’ve been using the Renogy 2000w inverter charger in our campervan for over 18 months and highly recommend it. Check out our unboxing and installation videos below for more information.

Generators
A generator is an inverter powered by a small petrol engine. The engine produces power that supplies an inverter, which generates 230v AC (UK). Generators are typically used as backup power sources when battery power is low or hook-up/shore power is unavailable. They are ideal for prolonged periods off-grid since they only require fuel, giving you more independence and flexibility to explore.
Although compact, storing them requires space. They emit fumes and can be noisy and heavy so not the most eco-friendly option. However, some models have ECO modes to reduce noise and fuel consumption.
Honda EU22i Petrol Generator

Features
- 2200w power output (max).
- Fuel tank capacity 3.1l.
- Run time at rated power output 3 ½ hrs.
- Weight 21kg.
