Description

This wiring diagram provides a clear, beginner-friendly explanation of how to correctly wire a Renogy 3000W inverter so that RCD protection functions correctly in a campervan, motorhome, or off-grid vehicle.

The Renogy 3000W inverter has a floating AC output and therefore requires a correctly implemented neutral–earth bond for an RCD to operate as intended. This diagram shows how to achieve this safely using a contactor, ensuring protection against electric shock when operating on inverter power.

However, the 3000W inverter introduces an additional and commonly overlooked safety issue related to its built-in AC bypass / UPS function. This diagram explicitly addresses that risk and shows the correct, compliant method of installing a separate external changeover / bypass arrangement.

The wiring arrangement shown is suitable for UK and EU installations and aligns with the principles set out in BS 7671, including Section 721.

Is This Diagram Right for My Van?

YES – this diagram is suitable if:

  • You are installing a Renogy 3000W inverter in a campervan or motorhome
  • Your AC system includes socket outlets or Class I appliances (metal-cased appliances)
  • You want your RCD to function correctly when running on inverter power
  • You understand that an external changeover is required for this inverter model
  • You are building a UK or EU-compliant AC electrical system

MAYBE – this diagram may still work, but check first if:

  • You are unsure how your existing hook-up or inverter changeover is wired
  • You are upgrading from a smaller inverter and want confirmation

NOT SUITABLE – this diagram is not for you if:

  • Your installation is outside the UK or EU regulatory framework
  • You are looking for a complete DC system wiring diagram

➡️ If you’re unsure, book a quick call and I’ll confirm whether this diagram is right for your van before you buy.

Further Information & Safety Notes

  • UK wiring regulations require all socket outlet circuits and Class I appliances to be protected by an RCD.
  • Without a correct neutral–earth bond, an RCD will not provide protection against earth leakage or electric shock when operating on inverter power.
  • Appliances may still function without an N–E bond, but the absence of RCD protection presents a serious safety risk.

⚠️ Critical Safety Notice – AC Bypass Limitation
The Renogy 3000W inverter includes an AC input intended for bypass / UPS operation. The supplied or commonly used IEC C13 AC input lead is typically rated at 10A, which is not suitable for a 3000W (13A) inverter installation.

  • A 3000W inverter operating from a 230V supply requires a 16A AC input.
  • Using the 10A-rated C13 lead presents a serious overheating and fire risk.
  • For this reason, the inverter’s internal bypass must not be used in UK/EU campervan installations.

This wiring diagram shows a safe and compliant external changeover / bypass arrangement, ensuring that all AC components, cabling, and protective devices are correctly rated for the load.

Always follow manufacturer instructions and ensure AC work is carried out competently.

Inverter Compatibility Notice
This wiring diagram has been designed specifically for the Renogy 3000W inverter.
  • Some inverter manufacturers (for example, Victron) may include an internal or software-controlled neutral–earth bond.
  • Other inverter models may not be compatible with the addition of an external neutral–earth bond.
  • Applying an N–E bond or external bypass to an incompatible inverter may result in equipment damage or unsafe operation.

Always confirm neutral–earth bonding and bypass requirements with the inverter manufacturer before installation.

Further Reassurance – Video Walkthrough
For additional reassurance, you can watch a detailed video walkthrough that explains and demonstrates:
  • The floating AC output of Renogy inverters
  • How neutral–earth bonding is applied
  • How correct bonding enables proper RCD operation

Consultation CTA – Not Sure This Diagram Is Right for Your Van?

Higher-power inverters introduce additional safety considerations, particularly around earthing, bonding, and AC changeover arrangements.

If you’re unsure whether your inverter, hook-up supply, or existing AC wiring is compatible with this diagram, you can book a call with me before purchasing.

During the call, I can:

  • Confirm whether this diagram suits your AC setup
  • Explain the bypass limitation in plain English
  • Advise if a bespoke wiring diagram would be more appropriate

This ensures your AC system is not only functional but also safe.
